Why It Is Advisable To Use Flea Control Boric Acid

By Coleen Torres

Boric acid is used to control fleas in homes. It is not expensive and contains very low level of toxins. It may be in powder form having other ingredients such as borate, sodium borate and Orthoboric acid. This acid acts as herbicide, insecticide and fungicide and cause dessication, removes moisture from fleas thus leaving them to die out of dehydration.Borate is normally odorless so when fleas go back to the treated places constantly, hey will eventually die. Therefore flea powders which have borate are somewhat safe to be used to get rid of fleas from your home without the risk of toxins of other pesticides or even their smell. So how can one use flea control boric acid to kill fleas at home?

Before using this chemical acid, ensure that the treatment area is a vacuum by getting rid of all the items that may be on the floor such as clothing, area rugs and dog beddings. Clean around all the baseboards and any cabinet bottoms in the room. Ensure that no children carpets go into the treatment area while you are still working with the powder.

Before applying the powder on the baseboards in your house, shake the canister containing the flea powder thoroughly. After application in the base boards, do the same in the closets and the cabinet bases. In case of any powder visible powder on the surface, let it be vacuumed immediately.

All floors with carpeting should be administered the chemical in a light coating. This can be achieved by shaking the canister from side to side. In treating the various places, one should ascertain that the area the pet loves to lay the most is well treated. Brush the powder deep into the fibers of the carpet using a push broom or a stiff powder until it can no longer be seen.

For furniture and wooden items, one needs to check on the joints and the underneath and treat these areas as they are mostly the hub of these pests. To ensure maximum efficiency, especially in the crevices, one may use hand brooms or hand brushes. The most appropriate thing to do is to remove all cushions and cover cloths and paste the flour underneath where they are covering. All the chemical remaining on the surfaces should be completely dusted out.

After the clean-up process, the vacuum bag must be disposed outside the house and far from reach of children and pets. Sealing should be done for removable dust cups from the vacuum and the routine of vacuuming should be redone a day after.

Boric remains the most effective chemical ever developed to control fleas. These insects survive on the blood they get from their hosts mostly animals and pet such as dogs and cat. They also feast on human blood.

Very small amounts of this chemical can last for a very long time so long as it remains in powder form. Therefore when fleas encroach already treated areas, they die. It remains extremely toxic to fleas but less harmful to people, pets and other non target animals. Its toxic levels to human beings can be compared to those of table salt though having slightly higher levels.
