What You Need To Know About Caring For Maltese Dogs And Other Small Breed Canines

By Tammie Caldwell

Although all puppies are cute, young Maltese puppies can be extra cute. They have such sweet faces and are so soft and fluffy that many people can hardly resist bringing one into their family. If you are considering Maltese dogs for your family, it is important to learn as much as possible about the breed so you can learn whether they are the right breed for you.

All dogs have similar basic needs and the Maltese is no exception. All canines need food, access to a water source, a place to sleep. All dogs need some sort of grooming as well although some dogs need more than others. Learning about what each breed needs specifically is a great first step since you can then get any necessary supplies or tools before you pick out your pup.

If you want a quiet, laid back dog that can be left alone without issues, you may find that this breed is not the best choice for you. It is true that their small size makes these dogs a good choice for a smaller living space. These dogs will sometimes have separation anxiety however since they are bred to be companions.

The age of the dog you get is something to think about. Most people choose to introduce a puppy to their family. This can be fun and exciting. There are many places that you can also get older dogs that need loving homes. Check out shelters and rescue organizations. You may find the perfect companion for your home at one of these locations.

Every dog will need food. The benefit of a small breed dog such as a Maltese is that they will eat less than a larger canine will. This means that your food bill will often be lower. Look for food that has a good balance of protein, fat and nutrients. Asking your veterinarian for some suggestions can help you end up with a healthy food.

A Maltese has long fur that needs to be taken care of. There are several different options that you can choose. The first option is to take care of the coat by washing it and combing out the tangles before they can form knots. If you don't want to do this, you can always keep the coat clipped short. A good groomer should be able to do this on a regular basis. You should also make sure the ears are kept clean, the area around the eyes is wiped, and that your dog's nails are trimmed to keep them in good condition.

One thing to consider before bringing your new canine friend home is where it will sleep. Again, with a smaller breed dog such as a Maltese, bedding and crates will be less expensive than they would with a larger dog. Soft beds can be a warm, wonderful place for your pup to sleep. You may also want to consider getting a crate as well where your new dog can be confined when you cannot watch him or her closely.

By getting in some basic supplies ahead of time, you can feel confident that you are ready to welcome your furry bundle of joy into your family. Just remember to give your pup time to adjust to his or her new surroundings and in time you will end up with a valued and affectionate family companion.
