The Very Basics Of Caring For A Dog

By Laura Dry

Dogs have been considered mans' best friend for thousands of years. That lovable animal that you think of as a member of the family has the ability to serve in many capacities. This article outlines some of the ways dogs have been useful to humans in the past, and still serve and important purpose in today's world.

It doesn't matter how good your dog is, you should never leave your property without keeping him or her leashed. A wild animal could draw his attention and make him run off into danger, or an unexpected provocation could result in some unpleasant situation with other people and their dogs. Your dog is your responsibility, so treat him right.

Avoid impersonating a medical professional when it comes to your dog's health. In an attempt to save money, many people try to diagnose their pet's conditions or use human treatments on various elements and that can be very dangerous to the animal. If you can't afford full vet care, tell that to the doctor and ask their advice anyway or if they could arrange a payment plan for you.

Refrain from making the training sessions with your dogs too long. Extended sessions can make a dog tire out and become bored easily when you are trying to teach them new things. Limit your training sessions to 20-30 minutes, as this will help to keep the full attention of your dog.

When choosing a dog for your home, don't forget to estimate the size it will be as a full grown adult. This is especially true if you have small children at home. Although a small puppy will be cute, it may grow into a large, one hundred pound dog. Do some research on the average adult size of the breeds you are considering.

You can always choose to foster a dog for a few weeks if you're not sure about making the full commitment of dog ownership. There are many less than fortunate dogs in shelters that would love to find a forever home. Fostering a dog could help the cause as well as find you a new companion you cannot bring yourself to return.

Keep your dog in comfortable housing. They should be able to rest off the floor and away from drafts. A training crate is a good choice or any covered shelter outside. Try placing a dog bed inside that has a warm blanket or a pillow inside. Wash the dog's bedding frequently.

Remember that dogs are creatures of habit and anything you start with him will be expected in the future. If you're not keen on him sleeping with you, don't let him do it only on occasion. Likewise, if you don't want him begging at the table, never offer him a bite of people food. He will learn and accept things if you are consistent.

Be strong when the time comes to say goodbye to your beloved dog. Many owners keep the animal suffering to keep them in their lives and that's not fair to the dog. Consult with your vet, then talk it over with family. If it's time to part ways with your dog, do what's best for him.

If your dog is undergoing a course of treatment with medication or therapy, make sure you follow your veterinarian's instructions precisely. For instance, your dog may need a cone and not like it, but your vet prescribed it for a reason. Your vet recommendations should be taken seriously for the betterment of your dog's health.

If your dog seems unhappy and is alone a lot, consider getting a second dog. Dog's love the companionship of others and enjoy another partner to play with. Choose another dog whose energy level and temperament matches your dog's, and you should have a good match.

Knowing the background of different dog breeds can help you in selecting the type of dog that will fit your lifestyle. Whether you are looking for a lapdog or a hunting partner, this article provides some valuable information. Remember the tips you have learned here when you visit breeders and pick out a puppy.
