Dog Chew Toys For Heavy Chewers

By Kerri Stout

The days are long gone when dogs were regarded as outdoor, working animals mainly kept for protection, to herd sheep or to pull sledges. The more mankind traded outdoor life for industrialization, the more our "best friends" had to adapt to fit into the small, concrete jungle. We may have taken the dog out of the wild, but we can never completely take it's wild, primitive instincts away. One of these instincts is to chew.

All dogs chew for a variety of reasons. Teething puppies chew to soothe their gums. Grownup dogs chew because they are bored, stressed or lonely. No matter what the reason, chewing gives them pleasure and what's more, it's healthy for their gums and dental hygiene. All that changed through the ages, is what they chew. Modern dogs literally have a worldwide assortment of dog chew toys for heavy chewers to choose from.

Any dog owner who has lost a number of slippers, shoes and/or expensive furniture due to their dogs' seemingly insatiable chewing habit, will testify to the frustration and expenses they suffered. They leaned the hard way that dogs don't chew toys, shoes, cushions or table legs because they are naughty or hungry, but for a variety of other reasons. It can be to seek attention, because they are lonely, bored or frustrated and in the case of young puppies, to sooth itchy gums during teething. But mostly, dogs chew on appealing articles for the sheer pleasure it provides them.

Having a huge choice of chew toys in every color, size, shape and texture is great, but it also burdens dog owners with the responsibility to find a product that is not only safe and healthy, but also appealing to their best friend. Many of the popular, flavored chew toys pose serious health risks due to hazardous ingredients. Going the natural way by feeding them raw animal bones can be equally risky, as the bones can splinter and rupture their stomach.

The large assortment of dog toy chews available can be very confusing. Owners should study the labels carefully and know the pros and cons of each. Synthetic chews made of rubber or plastic in the shape of cuddly toys can look very cute and appetizing, but might contain hazardous chemicals and colorants that are harmful when swallowed. Pieces may also break off and lodge in a dog's throat.

It is thus very important to find the right product that is both safe and appealing for your specific dog. It is also important to read the labels to know where the product was manufactured. Especially dog food and chews from China have proven to be full of toxins, contaminants, Salmonella and E-Coli. Many dogs have died as a result of eating contaminated products.

One of the best, safest dog chews that contains no chemicals or preservatives, can be found in vet shops in North Wales, Pennsylvania. The chews are manufactured from yak and cow milk according to an ancient Himalayan recipe and dogs love it. One can choose between a wide variety of dog chews that enhance a dog's overall well-being and dental health.

A good example is natural chews made from yak and cow's milk according to an old traditional recipe of the Himalayan people. These chews contain no chemicals or preservatives and can be found in North Whales, Pennsylvania. It consists of 100% natural ingredients that are both nutritional and digestible - and best of all, dogs love it!
