E Collar Alternative Suggestions For Dog Owners

By Annabelle Holman

When you pet dog has had an accident and has undergone surgery, or if they have cuts and grazes that need to heal they need to leave them alone. That is what the Elizabeth (E) collar is designed to do. Unfortunately for a lot of dog owners these collars are nothing short of annoying. That is why looking for an E collar alternative is at the top of their 'to do' list.

When you are looking for an alternative to this type of device you need to keep in mind that the health and safety of your dog is essential. Many people will want to avoid the large Elizabeth collar as it is also known because they can be too big and cumbersome. So here are some of the alternatives that can work well for you and your dog:

Collars that look like Elizabeth collars but are made from tough paper. As you would think these will work in exactly the same way as their plastic counterparts, but they can fold a little, giving your dog a little more comfort. However, as these are made from paper they might not be the best idea for dogs that can be boisterous as they can rip.

Collars that are just like the pillows that travellers use on flights that will blow up. You can fit one of these around your dogs neck and it will make sure that they can't get to their stomach and front legs. Be prepared for a blow up collar to pop if you have a dog that likes to bite.

Neck braces - this might sound a little strange but some dogs who are insistent on chewing, biting and licking their wounds need something that will work effectively. These work just like a normal neck brace that a person would wear, but they are ideal for dogs with upper body lesions. So if your dog has injured his or her front legs or torso they will work very well.

Collars that are made from a soft ring of fabric that has a soft inner. They fit around the dogs neck quite snugly and prevent it from getting to their upper body and front legs. You must keep in mind that some dogs can get these collars off, so they are best used on smaller dogs.

If you have old socks laying around they can be used as bandages to cover stitches and wounds on the legs and on the feet. You can hold them in place using medical tape and they will not slide down. If the dog has injuries on its torso you can use an old vest, t-shirt or even a onesie if you have a smaller pet.

As you can see there are several good alternatives to the E collar out there. If your dog has been injured and you want to leave the area alone try out one of these methods. In no time at all your dog will have forgotten about their injury and be back on the road to recovery.
