Choosing The Right Maltese Puppies

By Olive Pate

A Maltese is a small breed dog with an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years and requires the appropriate care to ensure a healthy, well balanced pet. Choosing Maltese puppies is no simple task and many people make the mistake of being caught up in the excitement of the buying process and fail to research the breeder. Prevent ending up with a pet that is fraught with health issues and behavioral problems because it is not obtained from a reputable seller.

When you are ready to buy a Maltese puppy, it is important to contact breeders with reputability and registration. This includes a licensing number and registration with a kennel club that includes adherence to ethical breeding practices and an investment into the maintenance of the breed standard. The pups are expensive because of the time and money invested in veterinary examinations, genetic testing, socialization, and similar health measures.

A large number of buyers that are interested in pups may be overwhelmed by the excitement of the puppy and fail to consider healthy breeding practices. When buying from a seller you have not researched, it could lead to selecting pups that are not properly formed, have not been purely bred, and may display health issues at a later stage. One must put precautionary measures in place where a deposit may not be refunded and ongoing payments requested.

Before buying a Maltese, it is necessary to remain aware of what to look for in both the seller and the puppies. Learn how to identify healthy pups that are well bred including a curious nature, moist noses, and soft coats free from parasites, odors, and dry patches. Purchasing online requires a thorough investigation into updated images of both the puppies and the breeding pair to ensure that well balanced pets are sought.

Implementing research can protect against making multiple deposits and without the option of a guarantee or a refund. One may deposit funds and not hear from a specific seller only to leave you without having received the puppy or any type of contract. One must remain aware of puppy mills and should not purchase from a pet shop where pets are often neglected and not bred according to healthy standards.

The seller should provide a contract and ensure that the pups have been examined by a veterinarian including the correct vaccinations. The completion of genetic tests and results can aid in detecting Maltese that meet with specified breeding standards. The puppies must be at least 10 weeks of age and should not include the selection of pets that are 6 weeks because of physical and developmental problems.

Understand how to determine genetic abnormalities and ask the breeder as many questions as possible to determine the extent of their knowledge. The breeder should be able to provide guidelines on the care of puppies including sterilization at the appropriate age. Many reputable sellers have a waiting list that a buyer will be placed on and notified when litters become available.

Identification of hereditary conditions and the completion of genetic tests can aid in assessing overall knowledge. A breeder can deliver healthy pets and proof of certification. A reliable seller can advise on healthy and the appropriate canine companions.
