Consider These Essentials When Deciding To Purchase Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Puppies For Sale

By Janine Hughes

The dogs affectionately known as Swissy, or in some cases, Swissie, are a very large working class breed. Because of their size and heritage it is important that future owners learn some essential characteristics that make them unique from others. Here are some reasons why these animals stand out from the rest.

Superior breeders host regular kennel open houses for potential owners. These are times for a casual get together with their great Swiss mountain dog puppies for sale. The visits help families get to know this breed, see Swissie behaviors in action with their families and have questions answered.

Caring for this breed tops the list of questions. The dogs grow up to be quite large and many worry about how good a fit they will be. Though their fur coats are shorter, the thicker coat requires weekly brushing. Shedding is minimal. Some wonder if they drool, but the major dog breeders associations label them as dry mouthed. Families with children ask if they are good being with youngsters, and the answer is that they are excellent. Though large, they take to baths quite well.

Once a breeder has puppies old enough to leave for new homes, the entire litter will get a complete check up. A visit to the vet includes checking ears, noses, mouths and hearts for good health. Taking temperatures for wellness is a must, as are any required vaccinations. Warm bathing and professional toe nail clipping is included. Playing with their litter is also added to give them plenty of socialization time.

Greater Swissys were originally born and bred in the isolated mountains of Switzerland. They were used to herd and guard livestock and serve as a watchman for their farm. They are large enough to pull loads, so they often did work similar to horses.

Although they are capable of doing much labor, there is a tendency for them to overheat in warm climates. Their fur coat is heavy, though short, and the thickness causes them to heat quickly when they exercise. Some feel they may be better suited for homes in cold areas. They do enjoy hiking in rugged mountains and often carry backpacking loads as part of a team of hikers. They also like to pull carts of equipment as this is part of their genetic heritage.

Greater Swissies have coats of fur that are in a combination of black, rust and white. The black is the main color overall, with white patches often on chests and stomachs, with uniform groupings of rust elsewhere. Their bodies have strong bones and heavy muscles, which make them confident and strong. Their paws, head and chests are large and broad, even from the time they are puppies. It is easy to see that they can be confident and bold.

Swissies are giants, but gentle with children. They are faithful to their families, and loyal to their masters. Some feel they are the best pets available for families with children. They carry a willing attitude about work and will enjoy tasks required of them. They need love and affection combined with opportunities to pull weights, and climb with their humans, easily becoming part of a family that appreciates their unique essentials.
