Guidelines For Making Quality Dog Nutrition

By Betty Murphy

Dogs tend to show if they are thriving on their food. If they appear great and possesses firm stools, they are likely doing fine. When feeding your older pet, the main objective should be to maintain health and optimum body weight, slow development of chronic disease and minimize diseases that may already be present. A nutritious, balanced diet is essential to keeping your best friend healthy. Below are essential tips for requisition of the right dog nutrition.

Teach your canine to always come and sit before placing the food bowl on the floor. Garlic assists the alimentary canal and can also help support weight loss. Introduce the new food gradually over a 7-day period by mixing your pet's former food with increasing proportions of the new food, until only the new food is being fed.

You may be giving your pet too many treats or not giving her enough opportunities to exercise. Give the canine more exercise, indoors and outside. Make sure, you have enough of the recommended food for holidays and, if you are going away, give clear feeding instructions to the person looking after your pet.

Increasing physical activity can be valuable to both weight loss and weight maintenance. Regular exercise burns lots of calories, reduce appetite, change body composition and may increase your pet's metabolic rate. If your pet constantly leaves some food in the bowl, you are probably feeding too much food. Reduce portions a bit.

You will need to be prepared to move them from a diet of its mother's milk to regular puppy food. Weaning should generally begin between three and four weeks of age and is ideally completely by the time the puppy is seven to eight weeks. Keeping a feeding routine is helpful for any dog, particularly young dogs or newly adopted dogs.

Food labels normally provide some guidance on various portion sizes, but your vet doctor will know how much food your best friend needs to retain a healthy weight. In dogs, as with people, extra weight may lead to health issues. Be sure to involve your four-legged best friend with affection and not food. It is wise to provide feed to pets in separate areas to avoid distractions, stealing foods and fights.

Divide the daily allowance into several meals for the most efficient weight loss. Your vet can calculate how many calories your pet should get each day, but most food labels do not tell you how many calories the food provides. Avoid feeding table scraps and snacks. Dogs get essential amino acids from meat; a vegetarian dog will need to get these from quality supplements.

Fats used in foods are typically highly digestible and are used by the body as an energy source. Dogs should drink about an ounce of water per pound of body weight daily, and of course, you know to always have fresh, clean water available. You may contact the food's manufacturers for calorie and nutritional information.
