Information About Home Veterinary Service Chester County Pet Owners Should Know

By Olivia Cross

People who own pets know how important it is to ensure that they receive the best veterinary care. However, for some this may prove challenging simply because their animal puts up a fight with every trip to the vet, they don't have a car, or they are just very busy. By considering a reliable home veterinary service Chester County PA residents can enjoy the convenience of having their animals cared for in their own homes.

A mobile vet is a fully licensed veterinarian who either exclusively provides house-calls, or this may only constitute part of their practice, and he or she may also provide office hours. The "traveling clinic" usually consists of a large van or motor home complete with the appropriate modifications required for administering veterinary care, and like a regular office, it must meet safety and hygiene standards.

Some veterinarians dedicate several hours each day to at-home visits, and work out of a clinic the rest of the time, while others operate solely on a "on-call" basis and strictly provide house-calls. Vets which fall into this latter category may not be able to see as many patients each day, but generally have more flexible schedules, and do not necessarily require a staff.

Enlisting the services of mobile vet is the best solution for anyone who has trouble getting around, pets who hate going in the car, and also animals which are ill, not easily transported, and require euthanasia. This allows the pet to peacefully pass away in its own home, and eliminates the need for its owner to make that sad, final trip to the vet's office.

Providing medical care to pets at their homes also gives vets the opportunity to assess the animal's living environment, and possibly note any areas of concern which could have an impact on its behavior or general health. Also, the demeanor of the dog or cat is more likely to be typical of him or her, if there is not the stressful surroundings of a clinic full of strangers and their pets.

Some mobile vets will provide a wider range of services than others, this depends mostly on the mobile facility and which equipment it has on board. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, and other basic types of care will be offered by most mobile vets, but some may also provide surgical services as well if they are equipped for it. If emergency or surgical care is not provided, patients will be referred to a clinic.

Fees for mobile veterinary services are often slightly higher than in-office visits since it is necessary to offset the cost of transportation and to compensate for time lost between appointments, however it is worth a bit extra to most people for the convenience it affords them and their pets. Also, many vets will charge a flat fee per visit, regardless of how many pets they will see, which actually saves the owner money.

It is not hard to locate a mobile vet in most areas. Other pet owners, veterinary offices, and the local humane society can usually recommend one or more. The yellow pages, and the Internet, are also likely to provide multiple listings for veterinarians who offer at-home care.
