Expand Your Family With Collie Puppies For Sale In PA

By Essie Osborn

If it's beginning to feel as if it's time to get a new family member, you may want to consider getting a dog. A pet makes a great companion and playmate and if it's of the canine variety, it can also act as a form of protection. If you're living along the Eastern Seaboard, a great starting point is to look among the collie puppies for sale in PA.

Collies originally came from the British Isles. They were a common sight in Scotland as well as in Northern England. They were traditionally kept as herder dogs and drovers, which is why another common name for this type of dog is the sheepdog.

There isn't just one collie breed but several types that belong to this family of dogs. In the British Isles there are for instance the Shetland sheepdog, the Welsh sheepdog, the old English sheepdog and the popular border collie with its black and white coat. Australian varieties include the Australian cattle dog and the kelpie. In New Zealand there is the New Zealand eye dog and the USA has the McNab shepherd.

Collies became especially popular in the 19th century because Queen Victoria loved these dogs. Another famous collie owner was President Lyndon Johnson, whose dog was called Blanco. If asked to name famous collies, most people would probably mention Lassie, the fictional dog that was the star of several films and TV shows.

The type of dog that Lassie was is called the rough or long-haired collie. Like Lassie, these dogs are usually a mix of browns and white. However, there are also mottled gray varieties. They have a face similar to that of a wolf and they have luxurious long hair.

Lassie's character was typical of collies in general. They're intelligent, loyal and easy to train. Because they're so gentle, they're perfect family dogs and are usually great with children. Especially border collies are very energetic and like working, so they're especially suited to life on a farm or with an owner who leads an active lifestyle.

Their long hair may make you want to think twice about collies but they actually don't demand lots of special care. It's normally sufficient to brush them once a week and they're very clean, so they don't have a strong odor. You'll need to give them plenty of exercise though, so they'll need to be walked every day. This will help if they have too much energy and it will also keep them fit and in good physical condition. Moreover, it will help you stay in shape too.

While it's easy to find collies in the PA classifieds or online, it's best to look for breeders through the American Kennel Club or another breeders' association. In this way you can avoid unethical puppy mills and you'll be sure to find a dog with a great pedigree. This is especially important if you're planning to use the animal as a show dog. If you only want a family dog, you may also consider visiting an animal shelter and adopting a rescue dog with collie characteristics.
