Looking After Schnauzer Puppies Properly

By Charles Morgan

Caring for a dog is definitely no easy task; it is much like having a child. Particularly in the case of young canines, it's important to know about the particular breeds, its needs and behavior patterns when getting a dog. Schnauzer puppies, like any other breed, have a specific set of care rules that need to be adhered to in order to live a long, fulfilling life.

The Schnauzer is so named for the way its snout looks like a mustache or beard, which is what the name means in Germany, the originating country of the dog. You can get one of three breeds for this kind of dog: the standard breed, the giant breed and the miniature breed. It is accepted in the category of terrier; however, it actually does not possess the traits nor temperament of a terrier.

Originally used for catching rats and also keeping guard, the Schnauzer is known as a working dog. Working dogs are used consistently by the police or even the Red Cross, and have been known to carry messages during wartime. The various breeds and sizes of Schnauzer have been a result of cross-breeding Poodles, Affenpinschers, Great Danes, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers and Boxers, to name but a few.

These dogs make excellent pets and are extremely loyal. The miniature version is not made to live outside, and this should be taken into consideration when bringing one into the home. They are also not overly aggressive dogs, which is good in cases where a number of people may be entering the home. That being said, they respond quickly to anything alarming, making them good guard dogs.

If this type of dog is properly socialized, then it is a great pet for homes with children. In order to be socialized, training for this canine needs to begin in the early stages, as the dog's natural independent nature and abundance of energy can be problematic if they aren't controlled. For example, a dog who cannot follow orders may become a nuisance for neighbors through persistent barking or otherwise.

If anyone in your household has asthma, allergies or other breathing issues, then this is definitely a dog to consider. It does not shed like other breeds and also lacks odor. Being hypoallergenic is a huge plus.

Schnauzer pups are fine with being inside, and will be well suited to living in an apartment. However, they do need daily exercise. This must not be excessive until they are older with a stronger frame, so a short walk is just enough to begin with. Puppies will need a lot of attention in the early stages, so not leaving them alone for long periods of time is recommended to avoid the feeling of abandonment, which could lead to unwanted behavior.

If you need to change your puppy's diet at any point, do it gradually. Start by mixing just a bit of the new food into the old food, increasing the amount of new food as you decrease the old food over the course of ten or so days. Once your puppy has eaten, put it in a confined space to go to the bathroom. Clean up the space immediately after any soiling and house training should not be a problem.
