By Minnie Whitley

You may be reading this article right now because you want to go into business and put out a Nigerian dwarf goats for sale sign. It would of course be good to know a thing or two about this special breed of goat before going all out in raising and selling them.

The first thing that you should decide is if you will solely breed them and sell the offspring, or specialize in enlarging your herd for dairy and meat purposes. Either way you should decide on either of these options or maybe take on both.

In essence when you do enter this business this business you will become a goatherd. In being so you will need to know some basic goat herding practices and knowledge so your herd will be healthy and manageable. You must therefore out this into your mindset so that it will be easier to acquire and store the knowledge that you need.

The key to a healthy herd is a how well you maintain your barn or not. The barn should be regularly cleaned, especially in warm weather, to prevent ammonia gas from building up from the urine and waste the goats scatter. Excessive ammonia in the air will cause your goats to become sick and become more susceptible to pneumonia, which can be quite deadly for them.

Proper body hygiene of animals must also be maintained ad they should be groomed regularly. The trimming of hooves must be practiced every two months or so as the goats do not have ways of wearing them down naturally as they would do so in the wild. Hooves which are untrimmed will affect the way they walk and their gait as it will make their steps imbalanced. This will make them more susceptible to sprains and broken legs.

In terms of diet, the goat feed or commercial feed mix must at least have 12 to 18 percent content of protein. Dietary needs and protein mixes between goats will differ according to age and gender. Try to get the appropriate mix feed needed thru further research or consultations with breeding and goat experts. Keeping a fresh supply of water always for your goats is also very important for their health, especially in warm weather.

In terms of breeding you have to be aware that these goats can start mating as early as seven weeks old. In addition, they have no set mating season and can mate the whole year round. With a gestation period of around one hundred and fifty days, they can have kids every four to five month or almost two to three times a year. One can definitely have a sizable herd in no time with proper care and management. You should therefore be prepared to increase the capacity of your farm in a short amount of time.
